Throughout 2012 animator Tom Hillenbrand ran a number of workshops aimed at making an animated film. The workshops were held at St Paulinus Church of England Primary School, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Temple Grove and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School as well as at Crayford Library and at the Danson Festival.
The film, told through the eyes of a Swaisland factory worker, tells the story of the factory winning a medal design at the Great Exhibition as well as the workers’ role in the Chartist movement and the campaign for the vote for the working man.
Those who took part in the workshops learnt traditional animation techniques using modern, user-friendly technology and camera-free techniques. The workshops taught techniques such as cut out animation and plasticine modelling.
